Healthy Touch

One of the first things my teacher Nancy said when we started school was to "Never underestimate the power of touch". I strongly believe that as a culture we've minimized the importance of touch and it was one of the main reasons I was attracted to Massage Therapy in the first place.

During the first week or two of class I decided to conduct an experiment. For one week, I kept track of how often I was touched [not including class time where we were practicing strokes] even the most absentminded pat on the shoulder. I was shocked when by the end of the week I had only been touched 4 times. I know I'm single and busy and for the most part my family isn't particularly touchy, but this strikes me as abnormal.

After moving home from Africa where straight men freely hold hands and space bubbles don't exist, it was a glaring cultural difference I noticed right away. We sit alone in our cubicles, need 5ft of personal space at all times with strangers and we wonder why depression and suicide is so prevalent in our society? And often, because we are either desperate or have never been taught any better we use unhealthy touch as a poor substitute.

We know that without touch babies can literally die, but for some reason it's okay to minimize the need as an adult?

These are just some rambling thoughts, but do I believe that we are a touch starved nation and I am so excited to play a small part in changing that.

Since the beginning of this year, I've been stressing out about my 25th birthday. The idea of turning 25 really hit hard and for the longest time I couldn't figure out why. Like sooo many people have felt the need to tell me, I'm still young and it's not like I'm approaching old age yet or anything. I really do know that.

The fact that it was bothering me so much really bothered me! I'm not someone who's ever worried about aging, but this past week when the day finally came I figured it out.

My mom says that when I was a little girl I would tell her that when I grew up I was going to move right next door and marry a man just like my dad. All through my childhood years and into high school my dream was to get married and have a family. That was literally all I wanted. I was going to be the most amazing mom ever.

Now I just turned 25 and I realized a while ago that life rarely goes according to plan and even though I loved Africa and I love Massage Therapy, I have to fight against a feeling of disappointment.

It is so frustratingly human to always want what you don't have, but I guess I just have to settle for being cliche and hope God continues to work on my heart and teaching me to be content with him.

I continue to be a work in progress.

Finding My Bliss

Every Tuesday I have a 4hr class on Deep Tissue/Structural Integration. The subject is fascinating and I love slowly deepening my understanding of the human body and how everything is interdependent and connected . . . but that topic is for another time. The man that teaches this class is amazing. He has a deep, abiding passion for both bodywork and teaching and it comes across in his every gesture and word.

He inspires me to look at things from a different angle and to explore my own motivations and preconceived notions and while he has said lots of inspiring things one in particular sticks out to me.

"Find your bliss"

I believe we've all been given gifts and talents in different and unique areas. I've always been one of those people who drifted and played at many things, but never one thing in particular. I love kids, but lack the patience to be a teacher. I can write, but I'm not especially motivated. I can take a pretty picture, but nothing all that spectacular. Crafting is good fun, but I refuse to follow silly things like patterns so everything is slightly 'off'. I love people so the non-profit angle seemed to fit and that was good and right for awhile, but my heart moved on.

I prayed and prayed. I hated that feeling of restlessness and wondering 'is this really it??' I felt a little cheated to be honest. But of course, He always knows best and I never fail to forget that and so I found Massage or God gave me Massage and I've finally found my bliss.

It's like slipping into your favorite pair of jeans that are worn from so many washings and wearings that there are holes in both knees and in the butt, but it doesn't matter because it's like coming home and this whole time I've been homesick for something I didn't even know I was missing.

So now I'm in a place of awe and thankfulness towards God. His sense of timing while puzzling and often downright frustrating is impeccable nonetheless.

End of a Long Pause

I obviously haven't been blogging much lately which is weird because I feel like I have so much to share! Life has become crazy busy, but I love it because I love what I'm doing and every time I say or think that I'm slightly shocked.

I never thought I'd find something I am as passionate about as massage. I thought I would be one of those people that survived on some meaningless job to pay the bills until retirement, but I am so grateful that that's not my story anymore.

Anyway, I have so much to tell you, but it really is too much for one post so you'll be seeing some more activity on here at last! I love blogging and it's a creative outlet that I definitely need!

Visiting Friends

It's kind of a dream come true to have my friends/family from South Africa come and visit me in my hometown, first Keri Dodge and just this last week Zach and Anneke Price! We talked and laughed and had amazing food and talked some more. Its was superb.

Though the visit was a short one, it was a huge blessing to be with some of my favorite people on the planet. Thanks Zach and Anneke for taking the time to come and see me and my family. I love you both and miss you more than I can say!

Oregon Fun

Yes, once again Hayley and I made our way to Portland for a weekend of fun and the joy of being together! I love these times. We always make a list of activities we want to do, but at the same time hold everything loosely as we both know the true purpose of meeting up is to simply be together.

I miss Hayley everyday and we always have such a good time catching up. Saying goodbye this time was harder than normal and I cried for a good hour on the drive home, but I'm so grateful for these times and I can't wait for our next adventure!

This past week I officially started at Northwest Noetic School of Massage! It started off a little boring as there was a lot a basic hygiene and school procedures we needed to go over, but we also had our first weekend class and it did not disappoint!

All day Saturday was devoted to lecture. It was fascinating to learn the history of both these fascinating forms of therapy!

Hydrotherapy is simply defined as the 'therapeutic use of water' and for thousands of years different cultures have been using this method for healing since ancient Greek and Roman times to Native American sweat lodges. We learned techniques from using hot and cold compresses to hot stone treatments to ice massages to saunas. It's amazing how extensive this topic is and I feel like we barely touched the surface!

Aromatherapy is the art and science of using essential oils for the purpose of detoxifying, rejuvenating, and enhancing/amplifying the body systems; with the intention of creating change. Now this was a topic I was a little more hesitant about and not very interested in, but I found it fascinating in the end nonetheless! Our teacher had degrees in natural medicine and had established her very own apothecary so she was clearly passionate about the topic! She got a little technical with some of the botanical and distillation details, but I love that I now know how to make my own massage oil!

All day Sunday we were given the chance to put into practice what we had learned the day before so we spent 8 hours giving each other spa treatments. It was a great weekend and I learned so much!

This is a steam cabinet we used. Basically it's a portable sauna and you can see the steam coming up from the opening at the neck! So cool.

Today is my little brother Grant's [a.k.a. Granite, Grantie Poo, Bamper-head] Birthday! Though he turned 22 today, in my mind I still tend to think of him at this age . . .

. . . and he still loves fishing! Though he's obviously grown up quite a lot he still has the softest heart of anyone I know. He's extremely intelligent and hard-working and I'm so proud of him and the man he's become!

Nostalgic Memories & New Beginnings

I can't believe it's been over six months since I left Africa! I'm always amazed at how quickly time moves and lately I've been reminiscing about these past few years and how life has changed so drastically.

This time last year, I was traveling to Zambia with the DTS. I spent 24hrs on a crowded bus with my friend Keri and saw Victoria Falls! Life looked so different just a year ago than it does now. In a few days I start Massage Therapy School and while I couldn't be more excited, I can't help missing the beauty and excitement of Africa. I can't help missing my friends, my dog, and my favorite coffee shop.

So here's to the next chapter of life [which after six months I feel is finally starting!]. Here's to nostalgic memories and new beginnings. I'm so ready.

Craft Fun

Last Friday was my mom's birthday and I wanted to give her something unexpected and special. While surfing Esty.com looking for that perfect gift I saw something fun and thought 'I can do that!'.

I had so much fun working on this and stretching my creative boundaries and I think it turned out pretty awesome!

My Spasms

For the last few years, I've experienced what I thought were panic attacks. They had all the classic symptoms of a panic attack. Pressure in my chest, shortness of breath, etc. It always kind of bothered me as I'm not a particularly anxious person, but I really didn't think there was any other explanation.

Well, yesterday I went to the doctor for a completely unrelated matter and casually mentioned my 'panic attacks'. The doctor was interested and asked me to describe them. So I told her how painful they were and how it felt like my ribs were being squeezed together in a vise and how whenever they hit me I would be curled on the floor in pain for at least a half an hour. She then calmly told me that, no, those weren't panic attacks, they are what is called 'Esophageal Spasms'. Which is exactly what it sounds like- when your esophagus seizes up.

Now there really isn't a lot they can do about these spasms, but that's okay cause I walked out of that office with this huge weight off of my shoulders. It changes my view of myself and how I handle life and I really wish I'd asked a doctor 4 years ago rather than self-diagnosing!

Cooking Light

Tuesday is my day to cook in the Deniston household and I love the opportunity to try new recipes and experiment. One book I've discovered that I love is The Best of Cooking Light. I've loved every recipe I've used and have a list going of the ones I still want to try.

I met David Song about 3 years ago. I thought he was so weird! A Korean-American New Yorker he was nothing I was used to, but it didn't take long for me to see the amazing man of God he is and we became friends. Through lots of great conversations and leading an outreach to Uganda and Mozambique together, David became a real mentor to me [he's super old] and I can't really begin to describe the positive influence he's had on my life.

He's getting married right this instant [I'm watching it live] in Capetown, South Africa to the most beautiful Nigerian woman! I can't believe I'm not there, but thankful I at least get to watch.

Voodoo Doughnuts

A few months ago when Hayley and I were in Portland, we kept hearing about the amazing doughnuts at Voodoo, but the line was so long and it didn't seem worth the wait. Well on this visit, we decided that we were going to try these famous doughnuts no matter how long we had to stand in line . . .

Almost two hours later, we walked out with our 6 doughnuts. You have to remember that this shop is famous in Portland and its been featured on the Food Network channel multiple times so we expected these pastries to be like nirvana in our mouths! Some kind of near-religious experience for sure.

Unfortunately, the doughnuts tasted like normal, earth-like doughnuts no singing in our mouths or anything, but we did have an awesome time talking in line [despite being freezing!] and now we have a fun story! Plus, the shop was decorated really neat and I loved snapping photos.

Tomato Penne Pasta

I don't cook too often, but when I do I like to go all out! I'm one of those people who can't stay true to a recipe. I always look for ways to 'improve' it. Sometimes it works, most times it doesn't, but at least I have fun experimenting!

Tomato Penne Pasta

salt and pepper

Turkey Sausage

1 lb. whole wheat penne pasta

Half of a white onion

Red and yellow bell peppers

1/4 cup olive oil

3 garlic cloves thinly sliced

2/3 pound cherry tomatoes (2 cups) halved or quartered

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper (optional)

1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

non-fat feta cheese

[The ingredients I added are the ones that don't have measurements!]

1. In a large pot of boiling salted water cook the penne according to package directions until al dente, about 13 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and onion and cook, stirring, until just golden, about 1 minute. Add the cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, oregano, crushed red pepper, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Reduce the heat to low and cook, stirring, until tomato juices run, about 3 minutes.

3. In a separate skillet, cook the turkey sausage.

4. Add the penne, parsley, feta, and sausage to the skillet (or bowl) and toss to combine.

This last week we had multiple birthdays here at the Deniston house. My brothers, Jack and Derek were both born on February 8th though six years apart. So February tends to be a rather busy month with three birthdays in all [Spencer being Feb 3rd].

So this week we had lots of great food and fun times!

Saying Goodbye for Now

Spencer leaves today for boot camp and this Friday we had a party for him at his favorite restaurant.

It was also his birthday on Thursday so we had fun combining the parties. I took the picture of the balloons and then my camera battery ran out so I didn't really get many pictures, but I did manage to take this one with my phone!

This picture below is proof that Spencer has always wanted to go into the military! Cutest kid ever.

My Little Brother the [almost] Marine

My younger brother, Spencer, recently decided to join the marines. Where does the time go?? Wasn't it just yesterday I was changing his diapers and giving him bathes?

As the second oldest sibling in the family, I tend to have more of a maternal bent toward the younger kids so while I'm very proud of Spencer I can't help being slightly terrified. I suppose that's normal.

He leaves in just over a week for Boot Camp so please keep him in your prayers!

Cross-Country Snowboarding

3) You need to have strong leg muscles. In other words, possess the ability to hop.

My Deep Freeze

I haven't been blogging much lately. I don't know if it's a lack of inspiration/motivation or simply boredom with my life at the moment. I've barely taken my camera out and find myself merely sleeping and working with little to no creative impulse.

This isn't me. It's not who I am, but I know when I get bored and life changes rhythm my coping mechanism tends to be to withdraw from people and my creative side definitely suffers. I don't know if I'd honestly call it depression so much as a deep freeze. While I don't mind working at Target, it really is the only thing going on in my life right now and that's just how it's going to be until massage school starts in April. Not exactly stimulating.

I wish I was the type of person who is able to motivate and push myself past my slumps, but I confess I'm a bit of a 'wallower' and it tends to take me awhile to mentally move past my problems. I'll get there though. Eventually.

Remembering 2010

A year ago today, I was celebrating the New Year in Brussels with my sister. . .

Shortly after that, I was back in South Africa where I led my first DTS . . .

I traveled to Zambia with the DTS outreach team and had a blast with my friend Keri at Victoria Falls . . .

I was able to attend the WORLD CUP!

I said goodbye to Africa and moved home amidst much tears and sorrow . . .

Settled back in Spokane and got a job at Target . . .

Excited to see what 2011 will bring!

Decorating the Tree

Decorating the tree in the Deniston household can be a somewhat daunting experience. Usually there's laughter, cursing, tears, arguing, and general chaos and that's just picking up the tree from the lot and getting it inside the house.

So this is usually what about half of the family is doing [hard at work] . . .

. . . and this is the other half [spectating and offering 'helpful' suggestions] . . .

Nevertheless, it's tradition and I have lots of fun memories!

My Worlds Collide

This past week, my good friend Keri came to visit me in Spokane! Keri was one of the first friends I made in South Africa. A Peace Corps volunteer at the time, I was secretly intimidated by her, but it didn't take us too long to become friends.

I loved having her in Spokane with me, but I have to admit that it was extremely strange at the same time! I felt my worlds collide in a beautiful, weird way. I had never seen Keri outside of Africa and here she was in my family's house!

I took her to get her hair done by my awesome friend Heather, which was also a little mind-bending, but so much fun!

My Brand New Obsession

FLOWERS!!! I have been obsessed with creating the perfect fabric flower for the last few weeks. I've had so much fun attaching them to headbands and hair clips and shopping in the fabric section of Jo-Ann Fabrics [which I've never had reason to do before]. Oh and buttons! I adore buttons!

I've resolved that all of my Christmas gifts this year will be handmade so that's forced me to dig deep into my creative side. I love it!

I found this recipe at Annie's Eats one day while blog surfing and had been looking for an excuse to make it ever since. She made it so simple with plenty of pictures and very clear instructions so for all of you non-bakers [and I am definitely a non-baker] this was very easy.

And man this was amazing and received lots of thumbs up from the family! I think we've found a new holiday tradition.

I haven't been knitting too much lately. That lack of inspiration I've talked about seems to have spread to my motivation to knit. But I did manage to finish this hat though it took me like two months which is very unusual for me.

I like it, but I think I made the brim a little too loose and I wish I'd used a more flexible yarn so it would hang down in the back.

Weekend Spontaneity

This past weekend, my friend Hayley and I decided to be spontaneous and meet up with each other in Portland, OR for a brief, but fantastic weekend. It was a long drive, but worth it just to spend some time with Hayley who I've missed dreadfully for months now.

We met up Saturday morning Hayley driving from Medford, OR and me from Spokane. We took the train into downtown Portland and walked around for hours enjoying the street market and eating yummy food.

We parted ways mid-afternoon Sunday and I already miss her so much I could cry! Hayley you will always be my favorite roommate. Please move to Spokane??

Seattle and the Seahawks

I had a wonderful weekend full of quality family time! On Sunday, we left the house at 6am to make our way to Seattle to see the Seahawks play. My parents own seats at Qwest Field so every home game they go, but this was my first time after years of hearing about it!

Once again, I'm not really a sports fan whatsoever, but I loved being with my family and participating in something they love and I adore Seattle despite the fact that it was raining so hard on the way there that my feet were completely soaked the entire game.

[Seahawks played the Cardinals and we totally kicked butt!]

It was a long day as we didn't get home till about 11pm, but so fun!

One way I kept myself occupied during the game [obviously during the breaks because football fascinates me . . .] was to create this!

My Postsecret Book

A few weeks ago, I ordered this Postsecret book from Amazon. I've blogged about Postsecret before, but just in case you missed it it's an . . .

mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a postcard.

To put my feelings mildly, I LOVE Postsecret! Not only do I think it's an amazing creative outlet, but the way it brings commonality and understanding is quite simply beautiful. Like I've said before, the secrets are from REAL people with REAL problems and issues so this is not for the faint of heart.

That being said enjoy a selection of my favorite secrets from the book! They range from the funny to the horrifying to the heartbreaking and they never fail to remind me that I am not alone.

Doesn't it just make you want to run into the street, put your arms around a random stranger, hug them tight and tell them how much Jesus adores them?? No? Just me then . . .

Family Outing

I love hanging out with my family even when we're arguing and not getting along very well. We are a loud, opinionated bunch and not afraid to use physical force to get our point across!

Yesterday, we decided to all go together to Greenbluff which is a local farm area that simply comes alive during the Fall with pumpkin patches, art and crafts fairs, corn mazes and apple orchards. It's a huge Spokane tradition during this time of the year to take an afternoon and enjoy the Autumn colors, drink fresh-squeezed cider, stand in line forever to get hot pumpkin donuts, and listen to an old guy on a banjo croon country favorites. Wonderful!

Now my family is not so normal mostly because with both my sisters currently out of the country the only female power in the house is my mother and I and against 6 guys that's not so much. So lets just say that my younger brothers didn't enjoy the experience quite as much as the rest of us did.

Inspiration

How do you inspire yourself? That's a question I've been asking myself lately more and more as I've found myself less and less moved to create and be passionate about the beautiful things around me.

I've noticed my blogging, my knitting, my journalling, my photography and frankly the way I view and live life have suffered lately. I used to be inspired by the little things around me. I'd carry my camera around with me, shoving it in my friends and families faces snapping photos of whatever caught my eye.

I love seeing a pretty hat on T.V. or a movie and running to my needles and yarn to try to duplicate it or copying a quote from whatever book I'm reading into my journal so I can remember and be inspired all over again sometime in the future.

I want to be inspired again by the small things. I want to see beauty in the everyday. How I get back there? I'm not sure yet, but I'm going to keep trying.

Adjusting

I had been preparing to move back to the States mentally long before I actually stepped on the plane in September. Through my own past experiences and learning from others, I thought I generally knew what to expect and while I've found that to be true for the most part there has been the occasional unexpected adjustment.

For instance . . .

1) Do you know how lucky we are in the States to have laundry dryers?? I can get all my clothing cleaned in less than 2 hours and I don't have to wait for a sunny day! How crazy is that? I'm not even going to mention dishwashers.

2) Security has been a huge adjustment. I had no idea how used to the danger in South Africa I'd become. Burglar bars, gates, and security guards had become my norm and it constantly makes me nervous. I don't want to stop at traffic lights at night for fear of hijacking or leave my windows open. I double or sometimes triple check that my car has been locked properly. It's odd to come back to the US and see how relatively casual people are here about security.

3) Everyone is so busy! I love living at home and with my family, but for the most part I feel like I just have brief moments with them as they run out the door for work and/or school. I know that that is the way life is here and to a certain degree I need to adjust, but I miss the quiet evenings in South Africa. I miss people dropping by at all times of the day to sit and chat. I miss having the freedom to walk into friends' houses unannounced and being offered coffee or dinner. I miss the fellowship and the sense of having a common purpose. I miss the slower pace of life.

As it is, I just feel constantly lazy these days and I have to almost continually remind myself that I've lived in a much slower culture the past few years and that it's going to take time.

I know there's more and I'm still processing, but I'll keep you updated.

Beautiful Montana

This past weekend I had a chance to go to Montana to visit my little sister, Natalie, who is preparing for a two month outreach to Mongolia through YWAM Montana. I was so excited to see Natalie and get a chance to visit her before she left.

The YWAM base is right in Lakeside on Flathead Lake and it was absolutely gorgeous! Fall was definitely starting to make its presence known in the colors of the leaves and the brisk feeling in the air.

Natalie had to deal with me sticking my camera in her face the whole weekend especially when we spent time with her boyfriend Rudy. They were good sports about it though!

One of the reasons I love living back in my parents house is all the yummy food! My mom is an amazing cook and I was blessed growing up with home cooked meals almost every night. When I 'cook' for myself, I tend to go for sandwiches or toast and cereal every meal, but not in the Deniston house!

Settling In and Answering Questions

I've been back home now for a little over a week. People are constantly asking questions. How am I settling in? How do I feel? Do I miss South Africa? What are my plans now?

All good and even reasonable questions, but I find that I have almost no answers for them. It may be because since the day after I landed, I've had a horrible cold and haven't felt well, but whatever the cause I know I need to take this slow even when almost every urge inside me is telling me to hurry up and do something with myself. My biggest fear is that I'll cave to the pressure and do something I have no passion or heart for and I'm desperately trying to avoid that.

So to answer everyone's questions in one fell swoop and to the best of my ability . . .

What's more American than highschool football?? While I can't say I love the sport [or really any sport], I do enjoy watching my brothers play and I've missed being apart of their lives and football is a big part of that package.

Adventures in Britain: The End

I had such a wonderful time with my family in the UK! I loved revisiting places I saw years ago and seeing new sights. It felt as if I was able to pause and take a deep breath before making that final step home.

We spent our final night in London, sightseeing and watching the protests happening due to the Pope's visit to England. Simply fascinating people watching! But my favorite part of this trip was going to the Apollo Theater to see the Broadway show 'WICKED'! So fun.

Yesterday, I had a wonderful, fun-filled day of surprises from all my friends here as a way of saying goodbye. It started out with a group of us going to a yummy breakfast at my favorite Cafe then I was taken to get an amazing hot stone back massage! Then another amazing meal, followed by a shopping trip. The day wrapped up with a great fondue meal at Zach and Anneke's house.

Wildfire

Winter here is cold and very, very dry. The air constantly smells of burning and ash rains from the sky as farmers and property owners everywhere take the opportunity to burn their fields. It's odd to me as wildfires back at home are considered dangerous and unpredictable, but you often see huge blazes that have been set and no one is watching them, making sure they don't spread.

Yesterday, a wildfire was dangerously close to our property. It came all the way down our driveway, but other than turning on some sprinklers there isn't much else we could do, no one to call. Makes me miss 911! Fortunately, the fire skirted our grass and eventually burned itself out.

Small Visitors

One of the reasons I love living so close together as a community [and something I'm going to miss more than I can say] is that our friend's children often run around the property popping in for a visit, grabbing whatever food or lipstick is within reach and running out again.

The End of an Era

This weekend I was hit with the reality that my friend and roommate, Hayley, will be leaving for home soon. Since I'm leaving soon too, it's been really nice to have her in the same transition period as me, but for some reason it only started hitting me these last few days that we're leaving each other as well!

Hay has become a part of my family and we've managed to click on a deep level. She's been an amazing roommate. She always handles the dishes and makes the coffee in the morning. We can talk long into the night after the lights are turned off and laugh with each other all day long.

Fortunately, she's from Oregon so I know we'll see each other again. In the meantime, I'm struggling to deal with the change. I'm excited to move home, but losing Hayley as a daily part of my life will be difficult.

Thank you, Hayley, for the memories, for the laughter and the conversation, for loving me for who I am and for always being there for me. I'm going to miss you.

So one important item on my list before I move back to the States was to visit the Dentist. I don't have Dental Insurance at home so I hadn't been for a basic cleaning and checkup for a few years. I wanted to go here, because it's so much cheaper.

Yes, that's right, I just got my second tattoo! My friend Anneke is a great artist and after telling her my idea of what I wanted she came up with a great sketch that was perfect!

Overwhelmed

Three weeks from today, I will find myself on a plane leaving South Africa. I am filled with random thoughts and feelings. Sorrow for everything and everyone I will miss. Excitement for the future and to see my family and friends at home again. Nervousness for such a huge life change.

These next few weeks will be spent organizing, packing, and spending as much time as possible with my friends here, soaking in their presence and telling stories of the past few years together. It's such a different view from the other side. I'm used to watching people come and go from here, but now that I'm the one leaving I find myself off kilter and unable to come up with the right words.

Roadside Stop

I love stopping at roadside vendors! It's so much fun to see what kind of random things are being sold. It's pretty common here to have fruit and veggie stands on the side of the road and this time of year you can find amazing deals on oranges.

There wasn't too much to offer at this particular stop, but the scenery was gorgeous with all the beautiful flowers. I think I would have stopped for that alone!

Yesterday, Hayley and I took the day and drove up to Graskop, a local touristy town where they have some amazing shops. We also drove to a beautiful view point and had a lot of fun snatching photos. Item #2 on my checklist was to visit the Reptile Park. I have no idea why I wanted to go as snakes, crocodiles, lizards, and spiders all used to freak me out. I come from the Northwest of America where all we have are garden snakes and maybe some rattlers in the deep mountains or deserts to Africa where living with the possibility of dangerous, venomous snakes is a given.

I remember that the first few months I lived here, I wouldn't go near bushes or high grass and walking outside at night when I couldn't see where I was stepping would give me a panic attack. Now I rarely even think about it, accepting the possibility of running into a snake as highly unlikely, but possible with a grace I never thought to achieve.

The park was fascinating and shiver-inducing. I posted too many photos, but I just couldn't decide so enjoy!

Dear Friends and Family,

As many of you already know, this September I'll be moving back to Spokane. This wasn't a quick or sudden decision, but something I've been praying about since early this year and as I get closer to leaving for home permanently, I find myself being more deliberate about appreciating the view around me. My friends here, the beautiful scenery, my favorite coffee shop. It's odd to think of this adventure coming to a close even as my excitement continues to
build for the next step in life.

Life here is changing. My regular work is tapering off as I begin to work myself out of a job and pass my duties on to others. It's a weird feeling, but I'm also enjoying the extra time I'm able to spend with people. I'm not sure what life will look like once I'm home again, but I'm exploring the possibilities. Change is never easy and I know this move will take a toll, but I'm trying to prepare myself as much as possible in advance. Please be praying for me that God would give me wisdom in this season and the next.

Yesterday was my birthday and I had such an amazing day! It started with a fondue night at a friend's house on Monday. Lots of wine and laughter!

Then I woke up the next day to a phone call from my family [the conversation is a little blurry in my mind as I am not a morning person!] and a bouquet of flowers and yummy savory muffins from my wonderful roommate Hayley as well as delicious, take-away coffee from my favorite cafe from my good friend Keri! What an awesome way to start my birthday!

This past Saturday, our staff all got together and went to a local paint-balling course and spent all afternoon getting covered in bruises, paint, dirt, and sweat.

Friendly competition arose between the teams as each tried to 'kill' the other first whether that meant crawling through underground tunnels or sharpshooting from the wooden fort on one side of the course.

It was a great day of fun, relaxation, and laughter!

Saying Goodbye

Last week, my brother Derek left South Africa for the States. He's lived and served here for almost a year and while sometimes it was difficult to work so closely with my little brother, I secretly loved having a part of my family with me.

When I drove him to the airport, I couldn't cry. I've said goodbye to so many people over the years so many times that I feel like I've built up a solid wall of protection against feeling too much when I give that final hug at the gate.

But all week I've felt sad and somehow lonely.

Being Vulnerable

I was reading my friend Jen's blog and her post today inspired me. I realized that it had been a long time since I had been open and honest on my blog which is odd because usually if I'm vulnerable anywhere it's through my writing. So here goes.

Emotionally, I've been in a funk for the past few weeks. With the DTS ending and life changing once again, I've struggled to find my rhythm in my daily routine, my relationship with God, and my level of homesickness. I've felt out of place and it's been uncomfortable. I'm someone who likes to know exactly where I'm at and to have a plan and a purpose and this feeling of drifting is difficult.

Lately, I wake up and feel sad for no reason at all and I don't think I realized it until I just typed those words. I'm sad and I don't know why.

I know I sound depressed, but don't leave thinking life is horrible for me right now. It's really not! I know God has something for me in this stage and I need to press into Him and find out what it is.

World Cup: Italy vs New Zealand

Yesterday, my friend Hayley and I went to the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit and watched New Zealand vs Italy play in the World Cup. It was an amazing experience! The crowds were crazy and the constant sound of the vuvuzelas were deafening. I'm so glad I went though I felt like I spent most of my time watching the crowd then paying attention to the game which tied 1-1.

You never chose the easier road and you always try to make the right decisions and encourage me to do the same. You've never been afraid of telling me the truth when I needed to hear it or supporting me through the consequences of my bad decisions.

Autumn in Africa

My favorite time of the year has always been Fall. I love the sunny days, cool breezes, and chilly nights. Reds, yellows, oranges, browns, and greens, pumpkin spice lattes, Thanksgiving, and football games.

Though technically there isn't really an Autumn here in Africa just Summer and Winter, it feels like Fall. The leaves are falling from the trees and the nights are getting downright cold. I love it!

Brittany's Special Coffee

When I first moved to South Africa, I was sadly disappointed to find out that iced coffee as we know it in the States doesn't really exist in my new home. I ADORE strong, cold coffee, even when it's chilly outside and prefer it to hot coffee 9 times out of ten. So imagine my surprise when I order an iced coffee from a local cafe and am given a lightly flavored coffee milkshake. Here iced coffee=milkshake. Ugh.

But really, how hard can it be? They have all the ingredients. So one day I went to my favorite cafe [Zannas] and explained how I wanted my coffee. Ignoring their shock and disgust, I assured them that yes, I was serious.

So this is what I told them . . . .

Take two shots of espresso and pour it over ice . . .

then bring me water and milk on the side . . .

and I'll take care of the rest . . .

. . . and presto! I have my perfect Iced Americano. It was over a year ago I gave those fateful instructions and now all my friends go in to order 'Brittany's Special Coffee' [I just say my special coffee]. There have been variations, such as people adding vanilla, but I remain true to the original.

Last night, our DTS graduated with lots of laughter and tears. It was a great night of testimonies, thank yous, worship, and a slideshow.

Today, we've been taking our former students to the airport or to catch a shuttle and it's all very surreal, but I'm so proud of them and how they relentlessly pursued God.

This past week has been so much fun! The DTS arrived home from their outreach on Sunday and Monday we all left for a week up to a local Retreat Center. It was a blast resting together, hearing outreach stories, and eating great food.

While the DTS isn't quite over the students are away on outreach and work for me has changed once again. I still have lots of details to take care of to wrap up the School, but lately a lot of my time is spent working on my computer putting together slide shows and lots of other random stuff.

While I do enjoy this type of work and especially learning more about Photoshop, sometimes it can get a little boring and my back starts to ache! I love working around people, so I'll often take my computer to a local coffee shop for a few hours.

Quiet Times

The past few weeks, I've been making an extra effort in my quiet times with God. Unfortunately, it's often the first thing to go out the window when I get busy or stressed and since that's been my life for the past six months or so being deliberate with God is a necessity.

One of my favorite places to go is out on this big rock on our property. It's quiet and peaceful and the view is beautiful.
